On-Line Zine: Delusions of Adequacy

Packed with droning indie goodness, Portland's Wow & Flutter has drawn comparisons to Sonic Youth and Sea and Cake. But on their newest release, Names (Jealous Butcher), they actually sound closer to Labradford , with added elements of Yo La Tengo, Rex, June of 44, Mogwai, Bedhead and, yes, Pink Floyd. There is a define Sonic Youth influence stemming from the band's interest in dissonant guitar textures, but it comes through more as an underlying framing device than a direct similarity. Names is a mostly instrumental album that blends a certain indie-pop sensibility into an overall aesthetic that is more cinematic, emphasizing on extended soundscapes where vocals that do come in are more of an extra compositional tool than a focal point. The music on Names comforts without boring, assaults without agitating and intrigues without being pretentious. It's a darn good album from a still-obscure band.

W&F's new album, Names is sleepy , orchestral indie music, with somber vocals that weave slowly through the songs and lull you into a morphine-like state.
