2001 Press: Continued>>>
Wow & Flutter is a Portland area band that plays a style of music that falls somewhere between the instrumentation of a band like Godspeed You Black Emperor! and the sparse and predominantly acoustic sounds of bands like The Halifax Pier and Rainy Day Regatta. Much of their music is instrumental, and the band concentrates on creating flowing, atmospheric rock-oriented sounds that turn out quite beautiful. And when they add vocals, the songs take on a different feel, one that seems to have a moodier and thicker edge.

Wow & Flutter throws a little vinegar in the mix, with their atmospheric guitars, low din, lovely cello, and curiosity about where, exactly, the borders between melody and sound collide.

Wow & Flutter's songs are the condensed pop verses, which slide from Yo La Tengo's spacious indie-rock through semi-psychedelic Syd Barrett-ness and back again for the coda.

Wow & Futter plunges into bracing lakes of noise, then wanders lonely paths of sparse and tragic sound.

Wow & Flutter might be aliens; they remind me of a UFO landing I once saw in Texas during a snowstorm. Beware - they strum their guitars patiently and sing like nymphs, but evil may lurk beneath.
